Abstract

In spite of agricultural subsidy programs to support agricultural production, canola production hasn’t developed in Turkey as it has been desired. Nonetheless, among the oleaginous seeds, in the last 30 years, canola has shown the most improvement in yield per unit area. In 2020, 121542 tons of canola was produced in 37989 ha in Turkey. Çanakkale province holds 5,91% of Turkey’s total canola production areas, and provides 5,43% of total canola production which is 6th in Turkey. In this study, canola production of Çanakkale province were examined with considering some socio-economic attributes. The data were collected from 83 agricultural enterprises by means of the Complete Inventory Method. According to the research results, canola production takes 1st place in the vegetative production pattern with a share of 31,09%. The average canola production area size was 84,07 da, the average yield was 296,20 kg/da, and gross output value was found as 604,25 TL/da. Within the study, it was found out that deficiency payment which was the most important subsidy among the others, increased the gross output value 27,49%. Also, capital assets of the enterprises were found insufficient for agricultural production which was concluded by many studies as a country wide problem. Foreign capital usage rate in the research area was found as 26,51%. In order to increase canola production in Çanakkale province, certified seed usage and irrigated production should be extended. Besides, deficiency payment amount which was 0,50 krş/kg between 2018 and 2020, should be revised according to the present conditions.
