Abstract

This study aimed to describe the chemical composition of the essential oil  of flowers, leaves and stems of Mentha piperita. The essential oils were obtained to hydrodistillation using a Clevenger-type apparatus. The EO chemical characterization was simultaneously obtained by GC-MS. Piperitone (%46.3), limonene (%16.9) and limonen-4-ol (%6.5) were the main compounds of the essential oils of flowers; piperitone (%52.3), D-limonene (%12.3) and 3-cyclohexen-1-ol (%6.7) were the main compounds of the essential oils of leaves; sabinene (%35.4),  limonene (%30.8) and thymol (%12.3) were the main compounds of the essential oils of stem. The study is the first in terms of the determination and comparison of the essential oil contents of the different organs and the locality where the Mentha piperita plant was collected. The obtained results support that essential oils may show variations within the species depending on various factors. In addition, the results of the study will be compared in species and genus, and it will make new contributions to the literature in terms of chemosystematics.
