Abstract

Brass; It is a copper-zinc alloy and the ratio of copper to zinc is adjusted according to the area of use, and its properties can be strengthened by adding different elements such as lead and aluminum if desired. With its superior metallic properties, the field of use of brass in the industry is increasing. Boron is an important resource for Turkey and it is the country with the highest reserves in the world. It is important for our country's interests to contribute to the national income by diversifying the usage areas of boron. Therefore, the rusting effect of borax on aluminum, copper and steel metals was investigated in our previous studies. In this study, the corrosive effect of borax on brass metal was investigated, and the inhibitory effect of borax on brass corrosion in basic medium was observed. For this purpose, the Tafel Polarization curves of four different borax concentrations were taken and the corrosion rate was determined. In the light of these results, it was seen that borax did not have a serious corrosive effect on brass. This result showed that borax used in various fields can be used safely. In the study, while the corrosion rate of 0.002 mm/year was obtained in 0.0125 M borax solution, the corrosion rate was determined as 0.022 mm/year in 0.100 M borax solution. Based on these values and the use of boron compounds in the literature as an inhibitor, it was thought that borax could be used to protect brass from corrosion in basic medium. The corrosion rate of brass was measured in 0.100 M NaOH medium and corrosion parameters were determined in the presence of 1000 ppm borax at different holding times. It was observed that the inhibitory effect increased up to 98.6% in the presence of 1000 ppm Borax. Borax is non-toxic and abundant resources in our country. This study proved that borax can act as an inhibitor in protecting brass from corrosion in basic medium.
