Abstract

Working of photovoltaic power systems smoothly and safety depends on the foundation of quantities such as current and voltage which are sinusoidal and 50 (Hz) frequency. However, these foundation quantities lose their sinusoidal characteristics because of many reasons and this occurs unwanted harmonic components in the photovoltaic (PV) system. In the study, it was observed that the load current contained harmonic components. The harmonic components were destroyed by the active filter which it controlled by the instantaneous power theory. The studied power system consists of a PV array, active filter, DC / DC boost/buck converter, DC / AC inverter, R-L inductive load with six pulse full wave uncontrolled rectifier. A six-pulse uncontrolled rectifier produces 5th, 7th, 11th, 13th, 17th, 19th, etc. current harmonics components. A active filter is used to reduce the total harmonic distortion of the input current of the three-phase full wave uncontrolled rectifier. PV power system is modeled by using Matlab/Simulink program, and simulation results show that harmonic components are eliminated. Before using the active filter the total harmonic distortion for current (THDI) value was measured as 86.38 % in the PV power system after using the active filter, THDI value was decreased to 12.14 % in PV power system.
