Abstract

Power factor correction (PFC) in power system has become a major problem nowadays because of the spread use of power electronic based devices. Poor power factor in any power system is not only undesirable, but also it can cause serious issues, such as additional costs, increased heat losses and low efficiency when PFC is not corrected properly. Increasing non-linear loads in power system causes various undesirable effects on power quality. There are many harmonic generating devices in power systems, and they should be taken into account when designing power factor correction circuits. This study was carried out to correct power factor in power system containing a harmonic components. The most common way to improve the power factor in power systems is to use power factor correction capacitors. The power factor correction capacitor (PFCC) is connected between the source and the non-linear load. When, PFCC is connected between the source and the non-linear load, the power factor has been increased from 0.733 to0.9965 in the power system. Power system is modeled by using MATLAB/Simulink program. It has been seen that the results of the analytical calculation and the results of the simulation are overlapped.
