Abstract

The building shell has an important place in improving energy efficiency and indoor comfort conditions. In the same way, the bio-skins and shells that exist in nature are the most important occurrences that are exposed to external atmosphere and stabilize indoor conditions. In this context, different dialogues between nature and architecture have been developed in order to be able to produce dynamic, kinetic, sensitive and adaptive solutions by inspiring / learning / adapting these formations from nature as made in many forms. The design principles of a sensitive, adaptable, thermal regulation feature are obtained by investigating the surface / skin / shell formations in nature for the facade / shell / envelope in the building by using a “biomimetic approach” that is one of these dialogues. For this purpose, interdisciplinary studies are carried out to investigate physiological, behavioral and morphological occurrences, and efficient thermal regulation principles for ecological and sustainable solutions are obtained. With that point of view, the question of what the “thermoregulation / heat regulation” principles in life are and how these principles can be transferred to the building envelope are the subject of this study. In this context, it has been discussed through four preliminary studies carried out experimentally in the literature on how biological organisms perform thermal regulation and which innovations bring to practice in architecture. As a result, it is observed that it will be possible to produce energy efficient building shells which can adapt to nature in the near future, can control the thermal balance in harmony with nature and require less energy from outside and control their own energy.
