Abstract

The bean weevil, (Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say, 1831) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae)) and Tribolium confusum Jacquelin du Val, 1863 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)) are important pests on stored legume seeds and cereal products (flour, macaroni, bran, biscuits etc.). In this study, the toxic effects of the essential oils obtained from Artemisia dracunculus L., Ocimum basilicum L. and Rosmarinus officinalis L. against A. obtectus and T. confusum adults were investigated. The adult mortalities in the 24th, 48th, 72th and 96th hrs of 10 and 20 µl/petri doses treatment of these essential oils were determined. The all tests were performed in laboratory conditions, at 26±1 oC and %70±5 relative humidity. Malathion WP (% 25 Malathion) was used as positive control. The results showed that these essential oils have notable insecticidal effects (beetwen %11.6 and %100) on A. obtectus and T. confusum adults in comparison with the controls. At 96th of the treatment, while the all essential oils (except A. dracunculus, 10 µL/petri dose, %95,0) were recorded causing 100% mortalities, these rates were determined between 83,3% and 100% for T. confusum adults. But, there is no mortality observed in the controls. These results suggested that the essential oils obtained from three different plants could be used as potential control agents for A. obtectus and T. confusum adults in the stored legume seeds and cereal products.
