Abstract

The widespread use of renewable energy sources instead of fossil resources has great importance both for the efficient use of resources and for the environment. Biomass energy, which is one of the renewable energy sources, is an important issue that is dealt with in energy policies created both in the world and in our country. The use of agricultural wastes in energy production as a vegetable biomass is an effective waste management strategy in terms of both waste disposal and energy generation. In this study, the biogas potential and energy value of the vegetable biomass occurring from agricultural areas in the Thrace Region were calculated according to vegetable production data of the years of 2017 obtained from Turkish Statistics Agency (TÜİK) and the amount and energy value of biogas were found 20037585.44 m3 and 10861.89 TEP/year, respectively. Thus, the potential of an alternative energy source has been demonstrated in order to meet the energy needs of the region.
