Abstract

Fixed and mobile loads on the structure cause the structure to behave differently. Although there are different methods to limit these movements, adding passive mass is one of the commonly used methods. It is a known fact that this added mass has a significant effect on the dynamic characteristics of the structure. Increasing the mass decreases the natural frequency of the building and the amplitude of the modal acceleration, while the earthquake loads coming to the structure increase. Although the decrease in acceleration amplitudes causes a positive effect on the dynamic behavior of the structure, the decrease in frequency may increase the probability of the structure to resonate. In addition, the increase in earthquake loads on the structure causes an increase in both internal forces and floor shifts. As a result, it becomes imperative to provide the optimum mass value (optimum mass), which ensures the dynamic behavior of the structure to occur in a safe zone for all three situations. In this study, the effect on the dynamic characteristics as a result of mass change was calculated by numerical and experimental methods. The findings and results obtained as a result of the numerical and experimental studies carried out on a four-storey building model during the study were presented comparatively with the help of tables and graphics.
