NEURODIAGNOSTIC TEST PERCEPTION OF STUDENTS IN THE VOCATIONAL SCHOOL OF HEALTH SERVICES: AN EXAMPLE AT A SPECIAL UNIVERSITY IN ISTANBUL

Abstract

The study was evaluated the perceptions and knowledge of 291 technician candidates of Vocational School of Health Services about neurodiagnostic tests by a questionnaire. The study was conducted by participation of health services students (n=291), who educate different programs at Vocational School of special university between march and may 2020. During the study period, 291 students were reached except for those who did not actively participate in the courses and refused to participate in the survey study. The study data, which was consisted of sociodemographic, neurodiagnostic tests including electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG) and trancranial magnetic stimulation according to current literature was collected by face-to-face interview method in the classroom environment in approximately 10-12 minutes by the researchers. 41.2% of the students included in the study are male (n = 120), 58.8% (n = 171) are female students. All of the students stated that the tests can not cause any harm to the patient. Among the study participants, 192 (66%) students stated that only technicians, 72 (24.7%) students only technologist, and 9 (3.1%) students only doctors can perform EEG. 3 students (1%) stated that both the technician and the doctor can perform the EEG. As a result, it could be said that the existence of different perceptions among health service students on neurodiagnostic tests which has a multiple variable application in health institutions. The educational activities could be supported with training meetings and visual brochures in order to aim to train qualified and professionally competent health technicians.
