Abstract

In this study, the effect of green roofs on the cooling load of the building is examined over the buildings with the same floor area but different building forms. For this purpose, the cooling loads were calculated for the Antalya and Elazığ provinces selected from two different climatic zones: hot-humid and temperate-dry, with equal floor space and square, rectangular and L-shaped houses with terrace roofs. Then, assuming that the same housing samples have green roof application, the calculations are made and the results obtained are compared. In addition, in cases where the plant layer thickness increased by 5 cm and changed between 5-50 cm in terrace roof application. In addition, externally insulated and sandwich wall types are used as variants in the calculations in order to find the most advantageous combination of roof and wall building elements in terms of energy consumption. As a result, it has been found that green roof application reduces building cooling load for both Elazığ and Antalya in all calculations made by building forms and wall types. The lowest cooling load for both provinces was obtained in square form and sandwich wall applications. The green roof application had an impact on the cooling load of the building between 3.19% and 8.88% considering the Antalya and externally insulated wall type, and between 3.23% and 8.96% when the sandwich wall type was considered. These values were obtained between 3.06% and 8.49% for Elazığ and externally insulated wall type, and between 3.16% and 8.39% for sandwich wall type. According to these data, it is seen that the effect of green roof on building cooling load is higher in square form and sandwich wall type buildings, at least L form and externally insulated wall type buildings and the effect of green roof usage on cooling load in Antalya province is more than Elazığ province.
