Color Design in Yarn-Dyed Shirting Fabrics: Structural and Aesthetic Approaches

Abstract

Color design in yarn-dyed woven fabrics is a multifaceted process that integrates both technical and aesthetic dimensions of textile design. The perceived color of a fabric is not solely determined by pigments or dyes but is intrinsically related to the structural properties of the yarn, twist direction, weave type, fabric density, and surface topography. In this study, the interaction between color, weave, and pattern in shirting fabrics is examined from a conceptual perspective, emphasizing the structural, optical, and perceptual foundations of color planning. The fundamental components of color perception—hue, value, and chroma—are analyzed in relation to yarn geometry, weave structure, and fabric parameters to explain visual depth, brightness, and contrast effects on the surface. The study highlights that color decisions in woven design represent not merely aesthetic preferences but also structural configurations that define the fabric’s optical behavior. Consequently, a structural–aesthetic design framework is proposed for color planning in yarn-dyed shirting fabrics, offering designers an integrative approach that unifies technical knowledge and aesthetic sensibility within a coherent decision-making process.
